Since their inception, man-made pools and baths have been an essential part of society. Whether it was those used for religious ceremonies like the Great Bath of Mohenjo-daro, or those used for athletic and military training by the Greeks in their Palaestras, man has placed cardinal importance on the fashioned body of water.   It is with the Romans however, that we see baths, pools, and water features begin to define the garden landscape and the leisure activities that they promote.  Gaius Maecenas, for instance, a Roman Lord and patron of the arts, developed in his famous gardens the first heated swimming bath.
