In Giorgio Vasari’s Lives of the Artists, Filippo Brunelleschi says with regard to the dome of the Santa Maria Del Fiore in Florence that “Great projects always present great problems.”  For some these great problems are the end of an endeavor.  For those like Brunelleschi who could “already envisage the completed project,” the difficulties that arise along the way are a part of the road to the actualized vision.  In the case of Brunelleschi’s dome , order was part of his artistic inspiration, as well as the way to overcome obstacles and establish his legacy.
